How To Prime A Well Pump After A Power Outage

Twice recently after losing power for a period of time i have lost the prime to my pump. If the pump prime operation was successful you'll hear the pump start with a horrible noise, then get quieter as water begins to return to the pump body from the well, and you'll see the pump pressure gauge climb.

If your water pump is a two line jet pump (two pipes run to the well) it is drawing water from a deeper well and might need more than a small amount of water to prime the pump.

How to prime a well pump after a power outage. Once your home has power again the first thing you need to do is make sure the main breaker to the well pump is still on. Here's what you need to know to prime your pump the right way. Successful priming ensures no gas is left entrapped inside the pump.

Prime pumping is simply adding water to the fill valve. If you’ve never seen a pressure switch before, look for a small gray box connected to a pipe that goes to your pressure tank. Protect the well pump from the harsh elements and keep key components from freezing.

To prime this type of well pump: Some well utilize above ground well pumps. After filling the pump with water, shut its control valve, and loosen the prime plug.

Remove gauge with bushing or bladder tank from top of pump. Pour water into the prime opening until the housing is full with water. The plug does not have to be tightened down yet.

Turn the pump electrical power back on. If the pump's breaker isn't tripped, you may need to prime your pump to make the water start flowing again. Ad high quality pump centrifugal with competitive price

Open faucet or hose bib at pump to bleed air from system. Each breaker should be labeled for what it powers. If it is a submersible are you sure that the pump is running?

That may restore the water. To avoid well pump issues, then inspect the well hole to ensure it is sealed properly. If you suspect that your pump has lost its prime, be sure.

This is usually an easy task and all you need to do is turn the lever to “auto” and hold it until the pump turns on and the pressure gauge reads 30psi. Some pressure switches may need to be reset after a power outage. If it an above ground pump, you probably need to prime the pump which means that you will need a pump guy shortly to fix an upcoming problem.

Run the pump whilst the priming plug is fitted loosely. Turn off the control valve. Find the one that is marked well pump.

First, after power is restored, check the well's main breaker, which should still be on. Winter storms can bring power outages. Primarily, you need to prime a well pump before it works and serves its purpose.

Sometimes power fluctuations just before an outage will cause it to trip if the pump happens to be on during that time. Pour water into pump until water fills pump housing. Use a hose to fill both the pump casing and suction line with water.

Partially plug the hole and run the pump until the air bubbles cease. Listen to the pump and watch the water pressure gauge. Check to ensure your pump's circuit breaker hasn't tripped and caused the well to lose power.

Fill it with water after. If the breaker is in the opposite direction as the other breakers then it has tripped. Those who own vacation homes equipped with wells must often prime their system during their first visit each year.

The tank should fill in a couple minutes. A well pump may naturally lose its prime if left inactive for extended periods of time. In the process, you need to get rid of the air from the pump first.

The actual time depends on the size of the pump. A submersible well pump doesn't suffer from pump cavitation because it operates underwater where the pressure is relatively consistent. Now go outside and see if you hear your well pump.

Take note that if it does not work, the chance of leaking pipes or defective foot valves, and damaged check valves are high. It's less likely to create air leaks: The air inside your pump affects your water's pressure and flow, so.

Repeat the filling and running actions until water leaks out of the pump instead of air bubbles, then fully insert the prime plug into the pump. Check all the valves by operating them manually. After a power outage, wait a while after the power comes on to turn everything back on.

If it is tripped, check the pump and wires for any shorts. Make sure all nuts and bolts get fastened. I have a deep well pump, goulds jet pump that i have replaced myself.

Quickly reattach the primer plug into the pump body. Simply flip the breaker so it is going in the same direction as the others. Turn the power to the water pump.

For homeowners with well pumps, then losing power could mean a loss of water as well. Stop the pump as soon as the air bubbles stop bubbling out in the area surrounding the priming plug. Should i reset this and how do i do that.

If it is tripped then inspect the well and wiring for any sign of a short before flipping the breaker on. Remove the plug and fill the casing with water once more. A pump can be primed via its priming plug, using either water stored in the pressure tank, or by making use of long hose and a neighboring water supply.
